THE BULL PEN LOUNGE

NASHVILLE, TENN

JUNE 10, 1999

Duane with Dan

As we went downstairs into the Bull Pen Lounge area below the famous Stockyard Restaurant, I couldn't help but remember that they had been well known for their country concerts but had stopped them several months ago.  The Stockyard's new owners had decided to bring the concerts back.  It's a great value and hopefully with some support from the fans they will be able to continue the tradition of having great country concerts.

Directly in front of the stage is a dance area and the tables are on either side with a bar along the back wall.  Videos from CMT entertained us loudly while we waited for the beginning of the concert.

We wondered about the drums on stage but when Dan finally did come out it was an acoustic concert with just Dan, Porter and Duke.   The concert began just past 9pm when Dan launched the trio into "Big Wheels In The Moonlight".  With a highly appreciative audience in tow - especially our group - Dan continued to take us through his musical world with such hits as "Rage On" and the more upbeat "Headin' West".  Briefly talking about each song he launched into "San Antone" illustrating the wonderful harmonies of the trio.  I could listen to that one forever.  West Texas was the inspiration for "God Must Be A Cowboy".  The upbeat "My Baby's Got Good Timin'" was followed by some light hearted banter about old cars as a lead in to "My Old Yellow Car".  A few words about his England Dan days lead us down the road to "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" and "Love Is The Answer".  As usual the crowd went wild.

Dan meeting with fans

Dan then picked up his sax and rocked us to "Good Times".  This always brings a smile to my face and a look of amazement to the faces of others.  There's a lot of people who are taken by surprise at Dan's ability with the sax.  He proves time and time that he's a darn good sax player!  The serious side of Dan emerges when he takes us around the world briefly before doing "We Are One".  Dan then picked up the pace again with "Three Time Loser" and "Love On Arrival" which happens to be one of Rosie's favorite songs.  Rosie's a fan from down under and greatly enjoyed the opportunity of catching one of  Dan's shows.   There was great audience reaction to "Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold" but it was "Bop" that brought them out of their seats clapping and dancing.  Taking only one encore - it wasn't enough - Dan finished his set with "One Friend".

Taking just a few minutes to towel off, Dan came out to the back of the room to meet with anyone who wanted to.  That included me as I always seem to have something for Dan to sign.  The audience was a wonderful mixture of fans, singers, songwriters, Baha'is and others - all of who patiently waited to meet with Dan.
