THE DUTCHESS COUNTY FAIR
RHINEBECK, NEW YORK
AUGUST 24, 1999
Nestled in the lovely Catskill mountain area, Rhinebeck offers even the seasoned traveler a host of things to hold their interests. Just a short distance from the winding Hudson River, Rhinebeck transforms itself during the end of August to a beehive of activity when the Dutchess County Fair opens its doors to the public. You're apt to hear cheers from the grandstand area at the start of a horse race mingled with the slap of leather as a team of huge 3000 pound horses strain to pull their weight in concrete on a sled. Rides by the hundreds and stalls selling everything from beanie babies to homemade fudge line the streets.

The oasis in the midst of the racing oval holds the tent which soon became the center of attention. Not only does it house the local talent show but it doubles as the entertainment tent. Wandering in about an hour early for the show I was treated to a wonderfully funny virtual magician. It's amazing what the power of suggestion and a few body movements can do to trigger your imagination.
At last it was time for the show to start. Porter, Dan and Duke moved on stage to a super welcome from the fans. From the moment the show began to the end, you could see the audience was captivated. I was surprised to hear a number of people comment on how great the band was and how good Dan played the sax. Most of the audience was genuinely surprised when Dan picked up the sax and started playing. Within seconds he had them. Song after song was recognized and appreciative applause rang out. The England Dan songs nearly blew the roof off the tent. Perhaps it was the fact that it was a little bit older audience. By the time the first chords to "Bop" rang out the audience was ready to let loose. Finishing up with a standing ovation, Dan quickly dried off and headed out to meet those fans who were waiting around for pictures and autographs..

Although a bit of a sound problem marred the start of the second show, it did give us all a laugh. It was different hearing Porter sing lead on a song which Dan sang back up! Once that was straightened out the show was off and running. Playing some songs that he had not played during the first show he struck a chord with the audience. The interaction on stage between Dan and the guys was great. The audience really seemed to enjoy it. Again England Dan songs went over extremely well. A break in the show happened when a fan brought up a small red package and presented it to Dan. Thrilled with his gift he carefully put it on the equipment for opening later. However, he did make a point in telling the guys "hands off". He finished off the evening with "Bop" once again but the standing ovation brought him back for a final song "One Friend". It's been a long time since Dan's been up in the Northeastern part of the states. Let's hope he comes back real soon.
